WHAT IS THE CALEDONIA CUP?
The Caledonia Cup is an Ontario/ Ottawa Valley Curling Association OVCA versus Québec competition for club curlers. There are five events. Each event will have an A, B, C winner. In total 15 teams will represent Ontario/OVCA and the same number from Quebec. The event is hosted by Curling Québec at the Town of Mount Royal Curling Club in Montréal on April 14, 2012.
The Caledonia Cup is for club curlers and follows the CCA Rules of Curling for General Play. Games are eight ends – ties will be broken by one full end played towards the glass.
All teams who qualify through their club (see #2) will play at the OVCA qualifying events.
The qualifying events and locations for the Ontario/OVCA are:
• The Lassie (women) at the Winchester Curling Club on January 14 and 15, 2012
• The Royal Victoria Jubilee (men) at the North Grenville Curling Club January 14 and 15, 2012
• Toner-Brodeur/Senior Men (age 50+ as of December 31, 2011) at the Huntley Curling Club February 25 and 26, 2012
• The Lady Gilmour (mixed) at the R.A. Centre on April 7 and 8, 2012
• Novice Open Colts (maximum five years experience) at the R.A. Centre on April 7 and 8, 2012
The A, B and C winner of each of the qualifying events will travel to Montréal to play in a one game (per event) winner takes all. The province with the most wins at the end of the day wins the Cup, banner and bragging rights. Each A-event winner will also receive a banner to take home to their club and trophy.
The Caledonia Cup Committee has the sole authority to grant exceptions to the rules in extraordinary circumstances.     top of page
HOW DO I ENTER?
Complete the entry form (or signup sheet) at your club and submit it to your club representative. Additional entry forms are available on the OVCA website.
If several teams sign up for an event, your club will host a club play down. It is up to the club to determine who represents the club at the qualifying events listed above. Should the club need assistance they should contact Jim Parker. Clubs will submit the entry form and cheque to the OVCA by the entry deadline on the forms. Send entry form and cheque to:
Ottawa Valley Curling Association, 27 Vermeer Way, Ottawa, Ontario K2K 2L9
Phone: 613-435-1836 Peter Smith: ovca.eventscoordinator@hotmail.ca
DOES OUR CLUB NEED TO ENTER ALL FIVE EVENTS?
No, in fact we realize that some clubs may only enter three or four events – it will depend on the size and demographics of your club.
HOW IS PARITY ENSURED IN THE EVENTS?
Great question! If 16 clubs enter, this will be three game knockout format. In other words, if you lose your first game, you drop to B, lose your second game you drop to C. If your team is in A and they lose the third game, they are out of the completion. This helps to ensure that when you play in the final game in Montréal you are playing against teams of the same calibre. If more teams enter, the draw will be adjusted to ensure parity.
ARE THERE ON ICE OFFICIALS? IF NOT WHAT HAPPENS IN THE CASE OF A DISPUTE (BURNED ROCK OR HOG LINE VIOLATION)?
No, there are no on ice officials. Good sportsmanship is the mainstay of curling – any disputes should be resolved by the skips and in accordance with the CCA rules of play. And don’t forget you have a team captain to turn to for advice.       top of page
HOW LONG IS THE GAME AND ARE THERE BREAKS AT THE MID-WAY POINT?
Games are eight-ends and there are no breaks. Time clocks are not in use but we do ask that you keep the game moving along.
MAY WE BRING A SPARE PLAYER OR WILL THERE BE A SPARE POOL AVAILABLE?
Spares or five member teams are not allowed. Should someone become ill or injured, we should be able to replace the curler from one of the other 59 curlers.
WHY ARE THE FINALS AT THE TOWN OF MOUNT ROYAL CURLING CLUB IN MONTRÉAL?
The Town of Mount Royal Curling Club was chosen for its historical and geographical considerations. The club was the first curling club founded in North American in 1807; it is centrally located between most curling clubs in Quebec and the clubs of the OVCA.
